Comfort reading is like comfort food. I keep coming back to the topics I usually read about, just like I keep coming back to comfort food and just never get bored of it.
For instance, I do a lot of comfort reading on design, about product updates from Apple and Google, on writing itself and happy-growth stories from entrepreneurs and businesses.
Over the years, I’ve gotten sucked into a downward spiral of comfort reading material on all of these topics. But recently, I’ve started feeling like I’m not learning much around these topics. Everything I end up reading on these topics either confirms my existing beliefs or is so uninsightful that it was a waste of time reading it.
I’m making it a point to read about things that cause some discomfort. The kind of things I don’t pick up regularly, and the kind of things that I want to get better at.
It sounds so obvious, but the pull of comfort reading was so high for so long that I couldn’t get out of it to read about a lot of other things I should have been reading for a long time.
